A fiber optic pigtail is a short length of optical fiber cable that has a factory-installed connector on one end and exposed, unconnected fiber on the other. The raw end is fusion spliced to a bare fiber from another cable or a fiber optic system, creating a continuous, low-loss optical path. The primary purpose of a pigtail is to provide a reliable, professional-grade method for connecting the fragile fiber to a robust and standardized connector.

Features:

1.1 Single vs. Multi-fiber: While most common as single-fiber, they are also available as multi-fiber pigtails (e.g., 12-fiber ribbon pigtails).

1.2 Connector Types: The terminated end can have any standard connector, such as LC, SC, FC, ST, or MTP/MPO (for multi-fiber).

How is it Used:

2.1 Preparation: The protective jacket of the incoming fiber cable is stripped back, and the bare glass fiber is cleaved (cut perfectly square).

2.2 Same for Pigtail: The raw end of the pigtail is also stripped and cleaved.

2.3 Fusion Splicing: Both perfectly cleaved fiber ends are aligned automatically inside the fusion splicer. An electric arc is used to melt the two glass ends and fuse them together permanently.

2.4 Protection: The fragile splice point is protected by a splice protector or heat-shrink sleeve that is placed over the fusion point.

Applications:

3.1 Fiber Optic Patch Panels & ODFs: This is the most common use. In a data center or telecom room, a multi-fiber trunk cable (e.g., from the outside plant) is brought into a patch panel. Each fiber of the trunk is spliced to a pigtail. The pigtail's connector is then mounted in a port on the front of the panel, allowing for easy connection to network equipment via patch cords.

3.2 Splice Closures: In outside plant or FTTx (Fiber to the Home) networks, pigtails are used inside waterproof splice closures to connect the feeder cable to the drop cables going to individual homes or buildings.

3.3 Terminating Active Equipment: In some cases, equipment like ONTs (Optical Network Terminals) or media converters can be directly terminated using a pigtail for a permanent, clean connection.

3.4 Repair: They can be used to repair a broken fiber by splicing a pigtail in-line to replace the damaged section.
